This sung-through jukebox musical is an adaptation of the 2004 rock opera of the same name, originally written and recorded by punk band Green Day.
Three American youths, Johnny, Tunny, and Will, seek to escape the media-saturated life of suburbia. The boys strike out in various directions, with Johnny seeking solace in the city, Tunny enlisting in the Army, and Will staying home with his pregnant girlfriend. The individual journeys challenge the boys, with each facing considerable hardships and finding few rewards. Eventually they all return home with hard-won maturity and a new outlook on life.
